Shinsegae Duty Free Shop Information and Purchase Conditions

Items purchased at Shinsegae Duty Free are exempt from taxes and can be purchased under the condition that they can be taken out of the country.
Therefore, you can only use duty-free shops when you leave the country, and you are not allowed to use duty-free shops when traveling within Korea, including Jeju Island.
Shinsegae Duty Free branches and online duty-free products can be purchased 90 days before your departure date, and you must have your passport (physical passport) and airline ticket (e-ticket) ready to verify your identity when purchasing. 
Duty-free purchases must be picked up at the designated delivery point on your departure date.
If you place an order with an arrival hall delivery slip, you can receive your duty-free purchases upon arrival. (Busan International Pier)

Using Shinsegae Duty Free Online Mall

Shinsegae Duty Free Online Mall allows you to shop anytime, anywhere, 24 hours a day within the ordering hours. 

  • When purchasing duty-free products, please be sure to log in with your departure ID.
  • If the information (nationality, date of birth, gender, English name on passport, passport number, etc.) entered during registration and ordering is different from the departing traveler's passport/exit information, the product cannot be delivered.
  • After receiving the product, you cannot change the payment method or change the installment month, so please return the product and repurchase it with your preferred payment method.

Traveler's carry-on duty-free limit

The amount of goods (including domestic products) that travelers entering the country from abroad are exempt from duty (including overseas purchases and arrival duty-free purchases).

  • Basic duty-free range USD $800
  • Excludes alcohol, perfume, tobacco, etc.

Guidance for beautification

If you don't receive the product upon departure, you can cancel the purchase or change your departure information upon re-entry to receive the product.

  • If you have a return trip scheduled to receive the product, you can specify a return date within 180 days of the original order date.
  • If you do not cancel the purchase and change the departure information for undelivered products, the purchase will be automatically canceled 16 days after the original departure date.

How to use immigration delivery slips

When you pick up your duty-free goods at the port of entry, the following applies

  • You can purchase and deliver up to $800 USD within the same arrival day.
  • If your combined third-party spend exceeds $800 at the time of delivery, you will be restricted from taking delivery of duty-free goods.
  • Perfume, which is a separate duty-free category, can be purchased and delivered up to 100 ml, with restrictions on purchases over 100 ml.
  • For offline purchases, you can purchase and import up to Total Liquor capacity not more than 2L and not more than US$400 in total and 200 cigarettes under the separate duty-free categories.
  • If your combined outbound and inbound duty-free purchases exceed $800, the inbound duty-free limit will be prioritized.
  • Currently, only downtown duty-free shops (Myeongdong) and online stores can be ordered with arrival delivery slips, and Incheon Airport stores cannot be ordered with arrival delivery slips.

Online Mall Liquor Sales

  • Depending on your transit or destination country, you may be restricted from bringing alcoholic beverages into the country.
  • Please check the alcohol import regulations of your transit/destination country before making a purchase.


Tips for offline shopping

Important Notes

  • Items purchased at duty-free shops are exempt from tax, so you can purchase them on the condition that you take them out of the country for use or consumption abroad, or as gifts for relatives abroad.
  • If you bring your duty-free purchases back into the country upon entry, you must notify customs if the total value of your purchases, including foreign purchases, exceeds US$800.
  • Please note that the personal information and purchase details of travelers who purchase duty-free goods at duty-free shops are recorded and managed in a computerized system operated by the Korea Customs Service, and travelers who purchase duty-free goods in excess of US$800 will be subject to customs inspection upon entry into Korea based on the computerized data held by the Korea Customs Service.

If you do not receive the product upon departure, you can cancel the purchase or change your departure information to receive the product upon re-entry.

  • If you wish to exchange/refund the goods, you can do so within 15 days from the date of receipt of the goods.
  • Exchanges/refunds are not available if the goods are lost or damaged for reasons attributable to the customer, or if their value is significantly reduced due to the customer's use.
  • If the product is not as advertised or is defective, you can exchange or refund the product within 3 months from the date of receipt and 30 days from the date you know or could have known.
  • Exchanges are only possible if the same product is in stock (if out of stock, a refund will be issued).
  • If the traveler is requesting a refund for carry-on entry, he/she must self-declare items exceeding USD 800, and must either hold customs or pay taxes (enter the country after paying taxes).

  • Tax Refund for Self-Declared Refund Items
    Refunds can be applied through UNIPASS (Korea Customs Service's electronic customs clearance system) directly by the purchaser if the refund requirements and necessary documents are met, and can be applied for within 5 years from the date of completion of the duty-free return.
    -Requirements for refund: ① Self-declaration at the time of entry ② Confirmation of the amount of tax paid on the goods through the taxable customs clearance statement (issued by customs) and payment receipt (issued by a bank).
    -Required documents: ① Refund application form ② Carry-on tax clearance statement ③ Return and refund receipt (issued by duty-free shop) ④ Copy of bank account (to receive refund)
  • Goods that are not delivered at the delivery slip will be returned to the U.S. on a regular customs schedule and will be automatically canceled if there is no contact from the customer within 16 days from the date of departure.

Restrictions on bringing duty-free goods into the country

However, if you bring your purchases back into the country, you must declare them to customs if the total value of your purchases, including those made abroad, exceeds $800 USD.

Personal information and purchase details of duty-free shop purchasers are recorded and managed in a computerized system operated by the Korea Customs Service, and travelers who purchase duty-free goods in excess of $800 will be subject to inspection by customs upon entry based on the computerized data held by the Korea Customs Service.

Therefore, please note that if you do not declare or make a false declaration, you may be subject to additional taxes in addition to taxes or severe penalties under the Customs Act.

Customs Self-Declaration Guide

  • Reduced tax rate for voluntary declaration of goods exceeding the duty-free range: 30% of customs duty (up to KRW 200,000)
  • Excess duty-free goods tax rate deduction range: Out of the traveler's carry-on duty-free limit (basic duty-free range) of USD $800, domestic goods purchased at arrival duty-free shops are the first to be deducted, followed by items with higher tax rates.

Separate duty-free items

  • Perfume 100ml or less
  • Total Liquor capacity not more than 2L and not more than US$400 in total *excluding minors
  • 1 pack of cigarettes (200 cigarettes)

Carry-on restrictions

  • In accordance with the recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to prevent liquid explosives from being carried on board, restrictions on carrying liquids and gels are in effect.
  • If you are traveling abroad after connecting on an internal flight, please be sure to contact your airline in advance as you may be required to follow the confiscation procedure for liquids due to the security regulations of the country and airline. (For example, if you are traveling from Busan - Incheon to Incheon - U.S.)

Restricted items in the cabin

Liquids and gels (cosmetics, perfume, red ginseng extract, drinks, toothpaste, hair gel, shampoo, mascara, lipstick, sprays, fountain pens, water-based pens, etc.)

If you are departing on a direct flight

  • When packed in a transparent, temperature-proof bag co-produced by all duty-free shops, regardless of capacity or quantity.
  • The receipt issued at the time of the duty-free purchase is enclosed or attached to the transparent sealed bag.
  • The transparent sealed bag must be opened upon arrival at the final destination and must not show signs of having been opened or damaged prior to that time.

If you are traveling through another country

  • Baggage is treated as baggage, and new, unused items are not allowed unless they are part of your baggage.
  • Personal items must meet the following personal item carry-on conditions to be allowed on board
    • Exception 1) When traveling through the United States, liquids and gels in opaque and metal containers are prohibited (transparent containers are permitted).
    • Exception 2) Liquids and gels are not allowed to be purchased if the destination is a U.S. territory, Australian territory, or Virgin Islands after a layover.

Carry-on conditions for personal items

  • Contained in a clear Ziploc bag (size: approx. 20 cm x 20 cm) and zipped closed
  • If the clear Ziploc bag is not fully sealed, it will not be allowed on board
  • Only one clear Ziploc bag of 1 liter (L) or less per passenger is allowed
  • Food for infants, medicines for passengers in liquid and gel form, etc. are allowed in any capacity, provided they are declared in advance to the X-ray screening personnel (ziploc bags can be purchased at convenience stores at the airport)

Guidelines for carrying lithium batteries on board

Tips for traveling with lithium batteries

  • Air transportation of explosive or highly combustible materials classified as dangerous goods must be carried out in accordance with procedures such as packaging, declaration, and acceptance as stipulated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and national aviation laws.
  • When checking in baggage, lithium-ion batteries (power banks) cannot be checked in.

    • Traveling to Australia, U.S. territories (including the U.S. mainland, as well as Guam, Saipan, Honolulu, and the Virgin Islands) (nonstop flights only), except that liquids are not eligible for purchase on nonstop flights to Atlanta, USA.
    • Traveling on Northwest (NW) and United Airlines (UA) to countries outside the U.S. (such as Japan) (nonstop flights only)
  2. Notes
    • Only available for departures from Incheon International Airport and not for departures from Gimhae and Jeju International Airports (but available for departures from Japan on NW Airlines).
    • Items cannot be purchased when departing Japan via a layover (but can be purchased when departing Japan on UA Airlines)
    • Orders placed after the available time cannot be picked up
